The Last Watch of Hero

Hero and Leander lived in rival cities separated by sea. Nevertheless, the lovers met every night when Leander swam across the stretch of sea guided by a lamp that Hero lit in her tower. As winter approached, one cold night, the icy wind blew out the lamp. Without the light, Leander lost the way and drowned, while Hero waited and watched in vain before throwing herself from the rocks to be with her lover in death.
